For all those knowledgeable on the topic of turbine engines..

Can you please tell me why they would not use as much oil (if any at all) compared to a piston engine. I have a general understanding, but am seeking a more detailed explanation.

Up, down, sideways, versus round and round..

Suck, squash, bang, blow, versus breathe in, breathe out.

I don't know a whole lot about turbines, but I'm guessing that the inner walls of the combustion chamber aren't lubricated by the oil as they are in a piston engine?

I was always told, in very basic terms, that it uses much less oil simply because of less moving parts.

That's also my understanding. A turboprop engine has its own peculiar issues because it has more spinning, whirring stuff than a turbojet but still less than an old recip like the R-2800.

In the TJ engine, lub/cooling is needed for compressor & turbine shaft bearings (which vary some in number by engine design) along with the accessory drive/gearbox.

If you really want some serious theory, Pratt & Whitney used to put out some terrific manuals on theory and practice. They were titled P&W Operating Instructions 200 for more theory than you'll ever need and #190 for more general operational information.

There are also some other textbooks by Prof. Irwin Treager at Purdue University. His manual makes #200 look like a primer.

Don't think I've ever had to put oil in the turbines I've flown!

Have to put oil in the chief nearly every time I fly it!
